Sale Catalog COver Paper Explained
80# Gloss Cover - A common standard for sale catalog cover paper. This is an economical choice, with a gloss coating.
80# Cover with Soft Touch Coating - If you’re looking to upgrade your catalog cover paper but still trying to be budget conscious this is a common go-to solution. The same paper weight as the standard gloss cover but with a “soft coat finish.” The soft coat finish gives the catalog a velvet feel, while giving colors a matte tone.
80# Cover with Gloss UV Coating - A little more cost than the first two options , but offers a high-end finish. If your design is flashy, rich in color gloss UV coating can be a great choice. This will really make rich colors shine with the added high gloss.
80# Uncoated Felt Cover - Again, a little more cost than the first two options, but offers a high-end rustic feel to your catalog. This textured paper can really set the tone on rustic designs and will produce matte colors.
70# Uncoated Matte Cover (10pt) - A little lighter in weight, this 70# uncoated matte cover pairs up best with lighter weight inside pages. This may resemble to most like a heavier card stock paper, has a smooth and will produce matte colors.
Sale Catalog Inside Page Paper Explained
80# Gloss Text - A common standard for sale catalog inside pages. This is an economical choice, with a gloss coating.
80# Matte Text - A personal favorite! We love this paper because it has the standard catalog paper weight but with a slight matte finish, making less ink smear when writing all of those sale notes in your catalog. This paper won’t print quite as rich in color as gloss papers, but will still maintain color richness.
70# Gloss Text - Similar to the standard 80# gloss text, but lighter weight. A great choice to use when you have a large catalog and need to cut back on some of your printing costs, but especially your postage costs due to total catalog weight.
70# Uncoated Matte Text - Another lighter weight paper option but with an uncoated matte finish, making it feel familiar to the paper used in your at-home printer, but heavier. This paper will produce matte colors.
Color Printing Options Explained
Full Color - The most expensive of all three choices listed, but in our opinion it’s also the most effective. Many catalogs today are printed in full color and after you’ve worked hard to picture your sale cattle and create a sale catalog, why would you want to showcase your hard work in anything else? Full color shows the true depth of images used throughout the catalog and helps you stand out amongst the competition.
Full color cover with black and white inside pages - Typically going with a black and white option will save you and average of $100-$300, depending on the size of your sale catalog. We always encourage our clients to quote both black and white and full color to use when making your final decision. The standard printing option at LivestockDirect is to print a full color cover with black and white inside pages. This option helps you still be competitive in the mailbox and help cut some cost by printing the inside pages in black and white.
Black and white cover and inside pages - This is not a common option, but can be done. Possibly the most budget friendly option, but maybe not the strongest marketing move when trying to compete with full color catalogs during sale season. When in doubt, quote out various color options to compare the costs.
Sale Catalog Special Cover Effects
If you’re looking for something more unique, we can do that too! It’s best to brainstorm with us early into your project so we can explore the best printing techniques that can offer you what you’re looking for and print it in the most economical way. Here are a few special effects we’ve loved in the past, but really the options are endless!
Die Cut - Whether it’s a graphic or ranch brand you’ve probably seen a die cut cover. There’s typically a one-time set-up fee with your printer, meaning you can use it every year without the additional set-up cost each time. This really may be more economical than you think, especially if the cost is spread out across the next five years of catalog printing. Simple die cuts are best, helping to eliminate tearing in the mail system and hold up on heavier cover paper options.
Spot UV Coating - Spot UV coating is the ability to add a clear, high gloss overlay to your printed catalog design. This can create dimension to your catalog cover, such as adding spot UV coating onto water droplets.
Raised Spot UV Coating - Spot UV coating is the ability to add a clear, high gloss overlay to your printed catalog design, but with raised spot UV you get an additional dimensional effect. This can create dimension to your catalog cover, such as adding spot UV coating onto water droplets with texture!
